Iranian ambassador: Yerevan’s Blue Mosque was an Armenian-Iranian mosque and will remain so
Iran’s ambassador to Armenia, Khalil Shirgholami, has claimed that the Blue Mosque in Yerevan is an example of Armenia and Iran’s shared cultural heritage.
TodayPress TV reports, citing Armenia’s Hraparak newspaper, that the ambassador made the remarks while speaking to journalists.
Shirgholami said Iranian architectural elements predominate in the mosque’s design. He pointed to the building’s turquoise tiles and architectural features as evidence of Iranian architectural traditions.
“Yerevan’s Blue Mosque was an Armenian-Iranian mosque and will remain so,” the ambassador claimed.
It should be recalled that the Blue Mosque was built in the 18th century, during the period of the Iravan Khanate, under the rule of Hussein Ali Khan. Historical sources attribute its construction to Hussein Ali Khan, the ruler of the Iravan Khanate, which was one of the Azerbaijani khanates.
