Iran’s latest target: The Blue Mosque in Yerevan
The Blue Mosque in Yerevan has been presented as an example of Iran’s cultural heritage in a video shared on the official social media account of Iran’s Embassy in Armenia.
TodayPress TV reports, citing “Qafqazinfo” that the post states the mosque was built in the 18th century by Huseynali Khan during the rule of the Afshar dynasty. It also describes the mosque’s place in Yerevan’s history in the context of Iranian cultural influence.
However, this presentation of historical information has sparked controversy. The Blue Mosque was built not under the Afshar dynasty, but during the rule of Huseynali Khan Qajar, the ruler of the Erivan Khanate.
According to available information, construction of the mosque began in 1760 and was completed in 1766.
