Tensions ease in Warsaw: Minister issues statement
Polish Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek has said the situation has stabilised following incidents outside the Constitutional Tribunal building.
TodayPress TV reports that, speaking to TVN24, the minister said prosecutors and police had prevented the situation from escalating further.
According to him, the individuals who had entered the court building were removed from the premises or left voluntarily.
Żurek said he considered the judges’ decisions credible and stressed that legal mechanisms should be used to enable lawfully appointed judges to begin their work.
The minister also said he wanted a general assembly of the Constitutional Tribunal to be held. According to him, the meeting could address budgetary and immunity-related issues.
It should be noted that political and legal tensions in Poland have intensified following Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s appointment of former government official Maciej Berek as a judge of the Constitutional Tribunal. Protests have been held outside the court building in recent weeks.
