Amid concerns about a possible Russian attack on NATO territory, more than 70 generals and senior military officers from Germany and the Netherlands have inspected potential military threat areas near Russia’s borders.

TodayPress TV reports, citing the German newspaper Die Welt, that the delegation included almost all senior leaders of the German and Dutch land forces.

The mission, held this week and largely kept confidential, has been described as one of the most extensive military inspections in Europe in recent years.

According to the report, the Baltic states have become a key area of responsibility for the German Army. In the event of a crisis, German forces are expected to be deployed to Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia rapidly and in large numbers.

Military planners are concerned that Russia could attack one of the Baltic states in the near future. Such a scenario could trigger NATO’s collective defence mechanism and lead to a direct military confrontation between Russia and the alliance.

These preparations indicate that European military leaders are taking threats from Russia seriously beyond the context of Ukraine. The rapid mobilisation and deployment of German forces to NATO’s eastern flank could prove crucial in the event of a potential crisis.
