“This is no longer a crisis, it is a coup!” – Urgent appeal to the president
Sławomir Mentzen, one of the leaders of Poland’s opposition Confederation party, has urged President Karol Nawrocki to convene an emergency meeting of the National Security Council. He claims that the events unfolding in the country have gone beyond the scope of a constitutional crisis and that the country is facing the threat of a coup d’état.
TodayPress TV reports that Mentzen made the remarks in a post on the social media platform X.
The politician said there had been an attempt to forcibly seize control of the Constitutional Tribunal building. According to him, Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski is being denied entry to the building. Mentzen also said that the powers of Święczkowski and Deputy President Bartłomiej Sochański had been suspended by Anna Korwin-Piotrowska. He suggested that she was inside the Tribunal building.
He also noted that fully equipped police officers were present at the scene.
“I urge President Karol Nawrocki to convene the National Security Council tonight. This is no longer a constitutional crisis; we are on the brink of a coup d’état! The leaders of political parties must meet as soon as possible to discuss the situation and determine whether it is time to stop and reach an agreement,” Mentzen wrote.
He also appealed to Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Szymon Hołownia, urging them to take steps to prevent further escalation.
