Tensions escalate in Poland: “There is no other way” – Prime Minister
Following tensions surrounding Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has stressed the need to restore the principles of the rule of law in the country.
According to TodayPress TV, the head of government made the statement in a post on his account on the social media platform X.
“Restoring the rule of law is our duty. After years of lawlessness under PiS, this is a difficult, sometimes painful process that requires decisive action. There is no other way,” Tusk said.
It should be noted that tensions erupted around the Constitutional Tribunal building in Warsaw on October 30. According to Polish media reports, police forces were deployed to the area. Reports about the incident allege that security personnel were removed from the premises and that the deputy president of the Tribunal was prevented from entering the building.
Meanwhile, the Warsaw Metropolitan Police Headquarters said in a statement that officers were carrying out their lawful duties on the Tribunal's premises but were not inside the building. Police said the intervention was conducted following a request from a Constitutional Tribunal judge concerning security.
Political and legal disputes have been ongoing in Poland for a long time over the functioning of the Constitutional Tribunal and the administration of the judicial system.
