Paris braces for mass protests as armoured vehicles deployed
Security measures have been stepped up in the French capital, Paris, ahead of protest rallies reportedly scheduled for October 24. Armoured vehicles have reportedly been deployed near government buildings.
According to TodayPress TV, the information was published on the Telegram channel of Russian broadcaster RT.
According to the report, the protests are expected to involve the Yellow Vests movement, students and trade union representatives. Local media reports suggest that up to 500,000 people could take part in the demonstrations.
Protests in France began in late September, when secondary school students took to the streets over problems in the education system. The demonstrations subsequently expanded, with rising fuel prices and declining purchasing power also becoming key issues.
On October 18, French President Emmanuel Macron called on the government to take measures to prevent further protests. He said those responsible for unrest would be punished and that support would be provided to affected businesses.
Macron’s political opponents criticised his remarks, arguing that the president bears responsibility for the social discontent in the country.
