Russia has accused the United States of disregarding the potentially catastrophic consequences for humanity of its actions in space.

According to TodayPress TV, the statement was made by Konstantin Vorontsov, deputy director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Department for Non-Proliferation and Arms Control.

He said remarks by US Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink about possessing orbital weapons, along with comments by General Dan Caine, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, about the possibility of military operations in space around the Moon, indicate that Washington’s ambitions to militarize space are moving into a practical phase.

According to Vorontsov, the United States has openly acknowledged its potential to deploy weapons in orbit and its preparations to conduct military operations in space.

The diplomat stressed that placing US weapons in orbit would significantly increase the likelihood of armed conflict in space and threaten the well-being of people on Earth.

He added that Washington was prepared to disregard the potentially catastrophic consequences its actions could have for all humanity in pursuit of its narrow interests.
