Erdoğan calls on UN to become “a fairer and more inclusive organization”
“Reforms are needed to make the UN Security Council a fairer and more inclusive body.”
According to TodayPress TV, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made the statement in a message marking United Nations Day.
Erdoğan noted that, for the UN to fully fulfil its mission, all states must adhere to the principles of the organization’s Charter and support reforms that would improve the effectiveness of its principal bodies.
The Turkish leader emphasized the importance of the UN’s role amid global challenges such as wars, hunger, poverty and climate change. He said humanity hoped for a future in which wars would end and lasting peace would prevail.
Erdoğan also described the situation in the Gaza Strip as evidence of the world’s need for peace and stability. Drawing attention to the scale of human casualties in the region, he stressed the urgency of resolving the crisis.
In September, the Turkish president also proposed abolishing the veto power in the UN Security Council in an article written for Bloomberg.
Erdoğan believes the Security Council’s current structure reflects the realities of the post-war era, while the modern world needs a more effective, fair and accountable system of representation. He said increasing the number of permanent members would not resolve the problem of power being concentrated in the hands of a small number of countries, but would instead expand the reach of the privileged system.
