During the early stages of the war, Russia surrounded Kyiv and demanded the city’s surrender and the transfer of power from Ukraine’s government.

According to TodayPress TV, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made the remarks.

He said Russian forces had completely cut off Kyiv’s food and water supplies, expecting the city’s residents and government leadership to leave.

“I was told that Kyiv was under siege and that the Russians wanted me to hand over power. Naturally, I threw those people out of my office,” the Ukrainian president stressed.

Zelensky also shared his views on Ukraine’s history, arguing that the country existed before Russia.

“Ukraine is the successor to Kyivan Rus, a great state well known in Europe. Russia did not yet exist at that time. Russia emerged after Ukraine,” he said.

According to the Ukrainian leader, Russian President Vladimir Putin presents history in line with his own political views and traces the beginning of events back to the 1917 Revolution.
