French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that demonstrations and gatherings without a legal basis will be banned in the coming days.

According to TodayPress TV, Reuters reported that Macron made the remarks following a meeting with intelligence services at the Élysée Palace on October 22.

The French president said prefects would ban demonstrations that lack legal grounds. Alternative routes would be proposed for protests organised by trade unions. The aim is to ensure security in city centres, particularly around shops and public buildings.

Referring to the events that took place last Saturday, Macron accused radical left-wing groups of attempting to overthrow the Republic. He said the groups had engaged in violence and organised premeditated actions, adding that tough measures would also be taken against other criminal activities.

According to the president, the French government will meet on Monday with students and school pupils, teachers, trade unions, employers’ associations, local authorities and parliamentary representatives. The discussions will focus in particular on the legitimate demands of young people.

Violence, looting and vandalism broke out during large-scale protests in France on October 17.

Further demonstrations are planned for October 24.
