Russia accuses US and South Korea of blatant provocation
Military exercises conducted by the United States and the Republic of Korea near the border with North Korea are clearly provocative in nature.
TodayPress TV reports that this was stated in a comment by Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry.
“Of particular concern is that the current destabilisation is taking place against the backdrop of large-scale military exercises regularly conducted by the United States and the Republic of Korea near the DPRK’s borders. These clearly provocative exercises are aimed, as their participants themselves acknowledge, at rehearsing pre-emptive strikes against the DPRK, including the use of nuclear weapons,” the diplomat said, commenting on rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
She stressed that the situation in the region is showing no signs of stabilisation and, on the contrary, continues to deteriorate.
Zakharova pointed out that the frequency and scale of military exercises by Washington and Seoul are increasing, with the drills now covering not only land areas but also airspace, maritime zones and cyberspace.
