Armenia faces a looming choice: EU or EAEU?
Armenia cannot become a full member of the European Union (EU) while continuing to participate in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) under the existing terms.
TodayPress TV reports that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made the statement in an interview with Euronews.
According to him, the government is seeking to create an alternative that would allow citizens to independently determine the country’s future.
Asked about Armenia’s European integration and its participation in the EAEU, the prime minister acknowledged that there is a fundamental contradiction between the two paths, particularly in matters of customs regulation.
“We understand that, under the current rules, membership in the European Union and participation in the Eurasian Economic Union are incompatible. At some point, Armenia will have to make a choice. However, our task at present is to create a genuine alternative so that people can make an informed decision, understanding the opportunities each path offers,” he said.
The prime minister also noted that European reforms could ultimately benefit Armenia regardless of whether the country joins the EU. In his assessment, aligning state institutions and legislation with European standards is in itself in Armenia’s national interest.
At the same time, Pashinyan stressed that a decision on the European path cannot depend solely on Yerevan’s aspirations. The European Union’s willingness to accept Armenia as a member will also be crucial.
