What prompted France’s far-right leader to offer a visit to Ukraine?
Marine Le Pen, the French far-right presidential candidate, has unexpectedly announced that she is ready to visit Ukraine.
TodayPress TV reports that she made the statement during an appearance on the CNews television channel.
Le Pen said she could visit Ukraine at any time convenient for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“We can discuss this issue—the question of France’s assistance to Ukraine—at any time convenient for him. If Mr Zelenskyy wants us to talk, I would be happy to come to Ukraine. However, I want to tell him that we no longer have the financial resources to provide assistance,” she said.
She separately emphasised that she had no negative feelings towards Zelenskyy.
It should be recalled that the leader of the French far right had previously said she would halt bilateral assistance to Ukraine if elected president. According to her, France could no longer “afford” to continue providing aid.
Le Pen also said she wanted to stop assistance to Ukraine six months after taking office if elected president. She has further stated that she would not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
Le Pen is known for her controversial position on Russia’s war against Ukraine.
