Russia may resort to covert mobilisation methods to address a shortage of soldiers for the ongoing war in Ukraine.

TodayPress TV reports, citing The Economist magazine, that the Kremlin could seek to persuade men facing financial difficulties to sign military service contracts rather than announce a large-scale mobilisation.

According to the report, people unable to repay their debts, unemployed men and students experiencing academic difficulties could be targeted. Some sources claim that this process has already begun.

The Economist writes that the Russian authorities are seeking to avoid an overt mobilisation that could trigger public discontent. Instead, regional authorities and major companies could be used to increase the number of people signing military service contracts.

The article also notes that, amid the possibility of mobilisation, some Russian men have been leaving the country, with increased movement towards Georgia and Armenia.

The Russian authorities, however, have denied claims of a new mobilisation, describing the reports as an “information attack.”
