Trump takes step that angers Merz – Phone call cancelled

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has cancelled a planned phone call with US President Donald Trump over his comments regarding the elections in Saxony-Anhalt.

The phone call between the leaders had been scheduled to take place ahead of the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York.

However, after Donald Trump openly congratulated the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party on its victory in the regional elections, Merz decided to cancel the call.

On his Truth Social platform, Trump described the AfD’s success as a “great night” and said that Germans were tired of the country’s “horrible immigration policies.”

He concluded his post with the slogan “MGGA!!!” (“Make Germany Great Again”).

The Chancellor’s spokesperson stressed that the cancellation of the talks was not related to scheduling issues.
