A US Marine has died following an incident during a training exercise at Camp Schwab military base on the Japanese island of Okinawa.

TodayPress TV reports, citing “NBC” and the 3rd Marine Division of the US Marine Corps, that the incident occurred on November 3.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released. The name will be made public no earlier than 24 hours after the next of kin have been notified.

“Details of the incident are still under investigation”,-the division said in a statement. The military also extended its condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.

It should be noted that Okinawa is Japan’s southernmost prefecture. A significant part of the US military infrastructure in the Indo-Pacific region is located there. Following World War II, the island was under US administration before being returned to Japan in 1972.

According to the publication, approximately 80,000 US citizens live in Okinawa, around 30,000 of whom are active-duty military personnel. Marines make up the largest part of the American military contingent stationed on the island.
