Does it matter to the Kremlin who wins in Washington?
The results of the US midterm elections are not expected to bring about major changes in Washington’s policy towards Russia.
TodayPress TV reports that Russian affairs expert Samir Ayyub, who is based in St. Petersburg, made the remarks in an interview with Sputnik.
According to the expert, Russia has already seen the full extent of US military and political support for Ukraine under the Joe Biden administration. However, that policy did not inflict a strategic defeat on Moscow or force Russia to surrender.
He believes that a stronger Democratic presence in Congress could reduce the likelihood of Ukraine making concessions, particularly under European influence. Nevertheless, Democrats may also adopt a more pragmatic approach at a certain stage.
The expert warned that Europe’s continued resistance to negotiations could push Moscow to rely increasingly on a military solution to the conflict.
In his view, such a scenario could lead Russia to expand its security demands towards NATO, particularly by calling for changes to the alliance’s policy towards Russia and its European neighbours.
