His documents burned, he was declared “dead”: 101-year-old Indian man fights for his pension

In India, 101-year-old Nadar Singh is fighting to receive the pension he is entitled to as a participant in the struggle for independence after local authorities mistakenly declared him dead several years ago.

TodayPress TV reports, citing NDTV, that the incident has caused difficulties for the elderly man.

The man lives in the village of Hijravan Kalan and says he served in the Indian National Army. He moved from Pakistan to India following the partition of British India. However, the documents confirming his identity and service were destroyed in a fire.

According to his family, Singh has therefore been unable to formalize his pension for many years. The situation became even more complicated about three years ago when the local administration officially included him on the list of deceased persons. Although the error was later corrected, the problems concerning his pension payments have not been resolved.

In addition, a memorial plaque was installed in the village in Nadar Singh’s honor on the occasion of Independence Day. However, the words “deceased” were written next to his name. The local administration said the inscription had been added by mistake and was removed after the family filed a complaint.
