Unexpected change on the Sun: Activity drops threefold

Scientists at the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences have recorded a significant decline in solar activity.

TodayPress TV reports that, according to the scientists, solar activity has decreased by approximately threefold over the past two years.

The indicator, which stood at 216 units in August 2024, fell to 76 units in August 2026.

Solar activity is primarily measured based on the number of sunspots. These measurements have been used since 1749 and make it possible to compare solar activity across different periods.

According to the report, the highest levels of solar activity were mainly recorded in the mid-20th century. One of the lowest levels was observed between 1800 and 1825.

Meanwhile, the first autumn geomagnetic storm began on Earth on September 8. A cloud of plasma released from the Sun several days earlier reached Earth, causing geomagnetic disturbances that lasted approximately 24 hours.

On September 9, the level of the geomagnetic storm also exceeded the threshold.
