Strategic airport in Greenland to remain operational for another year

Narsarsuaq Airport in southern Greenland will remain open for another year.

TodayPress TV reports, citing Ritzau, that the Greenlandic government and Denmark’s Ministry of Defence have agreed to continue using the airport to determine the long-term needs of NATO and the Danish Armed Forces.

According to Danish Defence Minister Jeppe Bruus, during this period, the Greenlandic government and parliament, together with allies, will be able to assess the future need for military use of Narsarsuaq Airport.

As part of the agreement, Denmark’s Ministry of Defence will provide the Greenlandic government with a subsidy of 45 million kroner (approximately $7 million).

It should be noted that Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. The US-owned Pituffik Space Base is also located on the island. The base is of strategic importance for early warning and surveillance capabilities against missiles in the Arctic.
