An attempted coup has been foiled in western Kazakhstan.

TodayPress TV reports that the country’s National Security Committee (NSC) announced the arrests.

According to the agency, a total of 10 people were detained in the city of Atyrau.

Investigators believe the suspects planned to forcibly change the foundations of the constitutional order in the country’s western region. They are suspected of establishing and leading an extremist group, participating in its activities, promoting terrorism, and inciting religious hatred.

The National Security Committee said that searches of the suspects’ homes led to the seizure of weapons, literature, religious items, narcotic substances, and other evidence.
