French tennis player Gaël Monfils made history at the US Open, defeating Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament, TodayPress TV reports.

The 40-year-old Frenchman became the third tennis player in the past 50 years to win a match at the US Open at the age of 40 or older.

Previously, only two-time US Open champion Ken Rosewall and five-time champion Jimmy Connors had achieved this feat. Rosewall won at the US Open at the age of 42 in 1977, while Connors won at the age of 40 in 1992.

It should be noted that Monfils, a former world No. 6, defeated world No. 60 Vallejo 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0.

In the second round of the tournament, Monfils will face American Learner Tien, who is ranked 15th in the world.
