Manchester City, which is at the centre of an investigation into alleged financial rule breaches, could face severe sanctions capable of shaking English football.

TodayPress TV reports, citing the Daily Mail, that the club faces the threat of a substantial points deduction that could force it out of the Premier League, as well as the prospect of spending two seasons in the Championship.

The sanctions, which could rank among the harshest in English football history, are reportedly expected to have consequences extending beyond the current season and affecting future campaigns. However, the likelihood of City being relegated directly to League Two, England’s fourth tier, is considered low. In addition to a points deduction, the club could also face a substantial fine.

An independent commission appointed by the Premier League has examined the club’s financial activities between the 2009–10 and 2017–18 seasons. Manchester City has been accused of overstating revenue, concealing expenses through commercial agreements and failing to meet its cooperation obligations during the investigation.

The club’s management formally appealed the independent commission’s decision on October 1. Strongly denying the allegations, City said it had evidence to prove its innocence. The proceedings could continue until January 2027.
