Price of Kyrgios’ controversial night in Mallorca: Money and ranking points wiped out

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) has explained why Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios received a one-month suspension after testing positive for cocaine.

Cocaine was detected in a doping sample taken from the 31-year-old player at an ATP tournament in Mallorca, Spain, in June 2026.

Kyrgios, who was provisionally suspended from competition on August 4, told investigators that he had used the substance during a night out with friends before the tournament.

According to an independent scientific assessment, the level of the substance detected in his blood was consistent with his account, confirming that the cocaine had been used outside the competition period.

Under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules, the standard suspension for such a violation is three months. However, the suspension can be reduced to one month if the athlete agrees to undergo a treatment program approved by the ITIA.

Kyrgios agreed to the program, and his suspension ended on September 3, 2026. However, the ranking points and prize money he earned at the Mallorca tournament have been forfeited.
