What is happening in Sudan? Hundreds of drones detected
Sudanese military forces have detected more than 180 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) over the past two months, most of which have been intercepted and destroyed.
TodayPress TV reports, citing Sudan Tribune, that the information was provided by a military source.
According to the source, special units are tracking the movement of the drones and shooting them down. However, some UAVs have managed to bypass air defence systems and reach their intended targets.
According to the outlet, more than 19 power stations across several states in the country have come under attack in the past week alone. These include the Al-Merghiyat power station in Omdurman. Drones have also struck six markets, including a market in Nyala, South Darfur. The main targets of the strikes are electricity and water supply facilities, as well as fuel depots.
As a result, some states have experienced disruptions to electricity and water supplies, seriously hampering hospital operations. Due to fuel shortages, hundreds of trucks carrying humanitarian aid have been unable to continue their journeys. Attacks on infrastructure have also negatively affected the agricultural sector.
Denise Brown, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, said attacks on energy infrastructure pose a direct threat to millions of civilians. She stressed that the systematic destruction of electricity and fuel supply facilities is unacceptable and called on the international community to take action to de-escalate the conflict.
