Iran lays claim to Samarkand? Social media post sparks controversy – PHOTO
Uzbekistan has protested posts by Iranian diplomatic missions abroad concerning the city of Samarkand.
According to TodayPress TV, following US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to Uzbekistan, several Iranian embassies abroad published posts claiming that the city of Samarkand and its famous Registan Square are part of Iranian-Islamic civilization.
The statements reportedly sparked discontent in Uzbekistan. Official Tashkent summoned the Iranian ambassador to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and handed over a note of protest.
The Uzbek side demanded that the posts in question be deleted.
