On October 19, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov received Japan’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Katsuya Watanabe, as he concluded his diplomatic mission in the country.
According to information provided by Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to TodayPress TV, the meeting addressed the current state of Azerbaijan–Japan relations and prospects for their further development. The ambassador’s contribution to strengthening bilateral ties during his tenure was noted with satisfaction.
Bayramov’s visit to Japan earlier this year and the discussions held during the trip were also recalled positively. The importance of continuing political dialogue, expanding economic and trade ties, and developing cooperation in the energy sector was emphasised.
The parties noted that Azerbaijan’s successful hosting of major international events, including COP29, the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) and the World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC-25), demonstrated the country’s contribution to promoting international cooperation, advancing the sustainable development agenda and addressing global challenges.
Cooperation within international organisations was also discussed, with emphasis placed on mutual support and continued dialogue on multilateral platforms.
Particular attention was given to expanding people-to-people contacts and developing cooperation in education, culture and sports. In this context, it was noted that Azerbaijan’s unilateral introduction of a visa-free entry regime for Japanese citizens serves to promote bilateral relations and tourism exchanges.
The sides also highlighted opportunities to strengthen mutual interest and cultural ties between the two peoples through sports such as judo and sumo. The importance of major sporting competitions hosted in Azerbaijan in these fields was also emphasised.
Minister Jeyhun Bayramov thanked Ambassador Katsuya Watanabe for his efforts during his diplomatic mission in Azerbaijan and wished him success in his future endeavours.
The meeting also included an exchange of views on other issues of mutual interest.
