Britain incurs unprecedented costs in response to Russia
The United Kingdom is allocating more resources to countering foreign threats than it did during the Cold War.
MI5 Director General Ken McCallum made the statement, TodayPress TV reports.
According to him, Russia remains the main threat to the country. McCallum noted that threats originating from foreign adversaries against the UK have increased fourfold in recent years.
The MI5 chief said that since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine, approximately 1,000 Russian spies had been exposed and expelled from the United Kingdom. In his view, this has weakened Russia’s ability to conduct traditional covert operations.
McCallum claimed that, as a result, the Kremlin had begun paying intermediaries and criminals to carry out sabotage operations.
He also stressed that the threats posed by Iran and far-right terrorism had increased. According to the intelligence chief, 50 arrests were made last year in connection with activities linked to Iran.
