Reports and related footage have circulated in Polish media and on social media claiming that a 36-year-old Azerbaijani national was detained by police for engaging in an indecent act in a public place in Warsaw. The incident has caused serious concern and regret among Azerbaijanis living in Poland, TodayPress TV reports.

Commenting on the incident, Farid Jafarli, head of the Council of Azerbaijanis in Poland (CAP) and the Azerbaijan House in Warsaw, issued a statement on his personal social media account, calling on Azerbaijanis living abroad to act responsibly and comply with local laws.

In his statement, Farid Jafarli stressed that it is unacceptable to judge an entire nation based on the actions of one individual, while noting that such incidents can nevertheless have a negative impact on public perception:

“I view these images with great regret. It is certainly not right to judge the entire Azerbaijani people or the thousands of decent, hardworking Azerbaijanis living in Poland based on one person’s actions. However, the reality is that such incidents affect how all of us are perceived by society. Poland has a large Azerbaijani community that has earned respect over the years through honest work, culture, family values and respect for the law. The irresponsible behavior of one individual can cast a shadow over the positive image these people have built over many years.”

The diaspora leader also stressed the importance of paying particular attention to behavior in public places where young people and children are present, and called on Azerbaijanis in Poland to remember that each member of the community represents Azerbaijan:

“I ask every Azerbaijani living here to respect Poland’s laws and the rules of society. Let us be mindful of our behavior in public places, especially in locations where children and young people are present. Let us not forget that here we represent not only ourselves, but also Azerbaijan.”

At the end of his statement, Farid Jafarli said that anyone who violates the law must bear individual responsibility for their actions, while stressing the importance of solidarity to ensure that other members of the Azerbaijani community do not suffer as a result:

“A person who makes a mistake must be held responsible for their actions. But we must not allow one person’s mistake to cause all our compatriots to suffer or face suspicion and negative attitudes. The vast majority of Azerbaijanis living in Poland are law-abiding, hardworking people who live with dignity and take care of their families and their country. Let us preserve this.”
