Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo has asked the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) to reduce the punishment imposed on him. The 41-year-old footballer reportedly sought leniency on the grounds of his “significant contribution to the development of football” and his “sporting merits”.

TodayPress TV reports, citing the publication Record.

According to the report, Ronaldo cited three mitigating circumstances in connection with his conduct:

"Significant contribution to the development of football”

“Recognition of sporting merits”

“A decisive role in establishing the truth”

The federation accepted the first two arguments but rejected the third, stating:

“Most of the facts are available in the public domain, eliminating the need for a lengthy and complex investigation.”

Nevertheless, reports have previously emerged suggesting that Ronaldo could be called up to the national team again for the November gathering despite his existing suspension.

The Al-Nassr forward reportedly left the national team camp without authorisation after head coach Jorge Jesus did not bring him on during the UEFA Nations League match against Norway, which Portugal won 2–1. As a result, the federation suspended the player from the national team for one month and fined him €255,000.
