Trump senses defeat and seeks to reach an understanding with Democrats
US President Donald Trump has praised the Democratic Party’s performance in the congressional elections and expressed his readiness to work with its representatives.
TodayPress TV reports that Trump made the remarks in interviews with Fox News and Politico.
The American leader stressed that Democrats had campaigned actively and put up a strong fight.
“Democrats did a good job. They fought very hard,” he said.
Trump noted that some Democratic representatives had contacted him following the elections and that he had already spoken with several party leaders.
“We will work together with Democrats to make sure things go well in our country,” the US president said.
At the same time, Trump commented on the possibility of political confrontations in Congress, recalling the president’s veto powers. He said he did not intend to use that authority constantly over the next two years.
“I have the power to veto, but I don’t want to just sit around and veto everything over the next two years,” Trump stressed.
The US president also admitted that the election results had surprised him to some extent. According to Trump, he had expected Republicans to perform better.
