Trump takes new step on citizenship: Future of thousands of children in question

The US administration intends to restrict the granting of US citizenship at birth to children of foreign government officials.

TodayPress TV reports that, according to information published by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in the Federal Register, the rule is planned to apply not only to diplomats, but also to certain employees of foreign embassies and consulates, as well as employees of certain international organizations.

The document states that children born in the US whose parents include at least one foreign government official and who are not US citizens at birth will not be automatically granted citizenship by birthright. They may be allowed to register as lawful permanent residents in the US.

However, the plan has not yet taken effect. A federal court in the US has temporarily blocked the implementation of an executive order issued by Donald Trump in this regard.

According to the court’s ruling, implementing the order could conflict with a previous decision by the Supreme Court. Therefore, DHS will not make any changes to the citizenship-granting procedure at this time.
