French social media is awash with edited videos praising Iran’s Islamic regime and calling for an “Islamic revolution in France”.

The idealisation of Ayatollah Khomeini by second- and third-generation French immigrants, who use artificial intelligence tools to translate his 1979 speeches into French and circulate them as memes, represents a form of deep social and political manipulation.

The widely circulated footage features Khomeini’s speech in Behesht-e Zahra on February 1, 1979, in which he promised free water, electricity and public transport for the poor. The speech is a classic example of populism. Against the backdrop of rising living costs and economic hardship in modern Europe, such promises can easily resonate with the public. The central contradiction is that, in Iran itself, the speech has become a prominent symbol of the Islamic regime’s broken promises, economic failures and ideological deception.

Translating archival material with artificial intelligence tools and turning it into dynamic visual content significantly amplifies its propaganda impact. As language barriers disappear, younger generations in France may absorb short, ideologically polished clips without any understanding of their historical context. This trend points to shortcomings in France’s social integration model and suggests that young people who feel isolated from society are searching for radical alternatives to the existing system.

Promises that culminated in economic disaster and restrictions on freedoms in Iran in 1979 are now being repackaged and presented to young Europeans.
