Peskov had refused, ambassador reveals: Will Russia and Ukraine meet at the negotiating table in Serbia?

Serbia is ready to provide a platform for Ukraine-related talks if there is a need for one, TodayPress TV reports.

Serbian Ambassador to Ukraine Andon Sapunji said this in an interview with the Apostrof publication.

“Serbia is ready to do everything that can make a real contribution to establishing peace if Ukraine and Russia consider our participation useful. If there is a need for a platform for dialogue or negotiations, Serbia is ready to offer one. I believe that sometimes having an additional platform for direct dialogue can be useful,” he said.

At the same time, the ambassador stressed that he did not want to “overestimate” Belgrade’s role in the peace process and that decisions on “the start of negotiations, their format and terms” should be made by the parties to the conflict. He noted that Serbia is not a party to the confrontation, “does not exert pressure on either Ukraine or Russia” and does not seek to “force them to accept any decision".

In February 2025, Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić also said that his country could host delegations for negotiations on resolving the Ukraine crisis.

In July 2026, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that Serbia “has so far had no involvement in any mediation efforts” concerning the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.

In addition, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said in July that Belgrade supports Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. At the same time, in August, Vučić stressed that Serbia had not sided with Ukraine.

Earlier, there had been discussion in Ukraine about the pro-Russian stance of Serbs.
