Military equipment mobilised in US capital as National Guard steps up operations
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has expanded the authority of the National Guard in Washington, DC.
TodayPress TV reports, citing “Politico”, that under the new decision, National Guard personnel are now authorised to use boats, armoured Humvee vehicles, vehicles equipped with police markings and light tactical vehicles to support law enforcement agencies.
The expanded military deployment, which will continue until the end of the year, is part of US President Donald Trump’s campaign to combat crime in the capital.
The National Guard will provide police with military equipment during operations against drug trafficking. However, troops have not been granted the authority to independently pursue or arrest suspects.
In addition, National Guard boats will help secure the area during operations targeting suspected leaders of criminal gangs and drug dealers in the Anacostia area of southeastern Washington.
The document also specifically states that the boats will not be used to monitor US citizens. Each boat will also carry federal law enforcement officers, who will be responsible for detaining suspects, including those attempting to escape by river.
