The European Union (EU) could make a positive contribution to resolving the Cyprus issue by strengthening relations between Brussels and Ankara.

TodayPress TV reports that European Council President António Costa made the remarks at a joint press conference in Nicosia following his meeting with President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides.

“It is clear that a united Europe needs a united Cyprus. We respect the established framework for dialogue, and together with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, I have already conveyed to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan our readiness to make a positive contribution to resolving the Cyprus issue, including by strengthening relations between the EU and Türkiye,” Costa said.

During his meeting with Costa, Christodoulides also discussed the EU budget for 2028–2034, the situation in Ukraine, EU enlargement, the development of the European Union’s relations with countries in the Middle East, strengthening the single market and enhancing the competitiveness of the European economy, as well as the prospects of Cyprus becoming fully integrated into the Schengen area.
