Historic first: Older people outnumber young children worldwide
For the first time in recorded history, the number of people aged 65 and over has surpassed the number of children aged 5 and under worldwide, TodayPress TV reports, citing Axios.
The main factors behind the shift are declining birth rates and longer life expectancy. Currently, 71% of the world’s population lives in countries where fertility rates are at or below the replacement level.
According to projections, the global population aged 65 and over could reach 2 billion by 2060.
