A signing ceremony marking the Lao People’s Democratic Republic’s accession to the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) has been held in Baku.

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry informed TodayPress TV about this.

The ceremony was attended by Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane, CICA Secretary General Kairat Sarybay and a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan, which serves as the depositary of CICA’s founding documents.

During the ceremony, Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane signed two of CICA’s key founding documents: the Declaration on the Principles Guiding Relations between CICA Member States, dated September 14, 1999, and the Almaty Act, dated June 4, 2022.

At the event, the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Laos, along with the CICA secretary general, delivered speeches highlighting the significance of the decision for CICA. They congratulated Laos on its accession and expressed their best wishes for its future membership.

The final decision on Laos’s accession is expected to be approved at CICA’s Seventh Summit, scheduled to take place in Baku on October 15. Following this, the number of CICA member states will reach 29.
