US deploys F-22s close to China: Preparing for war?
The US Air Force has deployed F-22 Raptor stealth fighters from the 525th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, based in Alaska, and F-15C Eagle aircraft from Louisiana to Kadena Air Base in Japan.
TodayPress TV reports, citing foreign media, that the deployment is part of Washington’s strategy to strengthen its military presence in the Indo-Pacific region and respond swiftly to potential threats.
Located on the island of Okinawa, Kadena Air Base is approximately 650–700 kilometres from Taiwan. This location makes the base one of the United States’ key regional strongholds for responding to potential military tensions in the Taiwan Strait.
The deployment of F-22 fighters signals Washington’s intention to mobilise its military capabilities at short notice should tensions around Taiwan escalate. Rotational deployments allow Kadena Air Base to remain ready to support operations across the region.
At the same time, the base’s proximity to Chinese territory creates potential risks in the event of a military conflict. Kadena could become a potential target for Chinese ballistic missiles.
The deployment of advanced US combat aircraft to Japan could also be interpreted as a military and strategic message to Beijing. Against the backdrop of rising tensions around Taiwan, Washington appears to be seeking to maintain its deterrence capabilities in the region.
