Another blow to Trump’s birthright citizenship policy: Court halts order

The implementation of US President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at restricting “birth tourism” has been temporarily halted, TodayPress TV reports.

A federal district court in Maryland has ordered the Washington administration not to implement several key provisions of the order.

Trump signed the order in early August with the aim of preventing foreign nationals from traveling to the United States so that their children could obtain US citizenship by birth.

The court’s ruling is not yet final. The case is being considered following a lawsuit filed by organizations defending migrants’ rights.

The court said the order conflicts with an earlier ruling by the US Supreme Court. In June, the Supreme Court limited the implementation of Trump’s previous order aimed at restricting birthright citizenship for children born in the United States.

Birthright citizenship in the United States is established under the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, adopted after the Civil War.
