NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has said that implementing the idea of a European army would require countries to give up their national armed forces, adding that such a move would not be feasible because of sovereignty concerns.

He made the remarks while speaking to students at Tallinn University of Technology in Estonia, TodayPress TV reports.

Rutte noted that if such structures were established, it would take weeks to decide who should do what, and the situation could deteriorate before a decision was reached. He added that nobody would want such a scenario to unfold.

According to the secretary general, given NATO’s existing command-and-control system, there is no need to establish a unified European army. Rutte noted that NATO already has a command-and-control structure capable of coordinating the operations of 32 separate national armies.
