The city of Shusha was under occupation for 28 years but did not lose its national spirit.

TodayPress TV reports that Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev made the remarks during a joint press conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Shusha.

According to the head of state, Shusha was liberated from Armenian occupation exactly six years ago:

“We are pleased to have you with us on Victory Day. Six years ago, Shusha was liberated from Armenian occupation. One day later, Armenia officially surrendered, bringing the 30-year occupation to an end.

The head of state noted that the liberation of Shusha carried great symbolic significance and was also one of the key stages of the Second Karabakh War.

For 44 days, you, my dear brother, and the brotherly Turkish people stood by our side. Your statement in the first hours of the war and your phone conversation with me showed the whole world that Türkiye stands with Azerbaijan. Your statement gave us additional strength and morale. Your historic words - “Azerbaijan is not alone. Turkey stands by its side - will never be forgotten”.
