“The USSR is gone, China is here” — Who will be the first to leave the table?

Against the backdrop of growing competition between Beijing and Washington and escalating global geopolitical tensions, the Chinese leader’s visit to the United States is at the center of international attention. The contacts between the world’s two largest powers are being closely watched.

So, what critical issues are on the table for the global powers? Will Donald Trump and Xi Jinping be able to reach an agreement?

Political analyst Samir Humbatov commented on the issue to TodayPress TV .

He spoke about a number of serious problems currently facing the international community:

“The Russia-Ukraine and US-Iran conflicts are ongoing. In addition, there are issues such as the Houthis significantly strengthening their control over Yemen, establishing the ability to control most of the country’s territory, and growing tensions between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia. At such a time, a number of issues are expected to be discussed between the sides. There is even a possibility that a closed-door meeting lasting several hours could be held. If such a meeting takes place, I think the sides may be compelled to reach agreements on some issues, whether they want to or not.

This visit also shows that the United States is moving toward recognizing China as a major power. Yet during his first presidency, Trump himself launched the trade war with China. Now he is beginning to acknowledge China’s power. This is important in terms of China, the formation of a new world order and global polarization.

Let us also consider that the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit was held some time ago, with Türkiye and other countries taking part. This is also an indication of the direction in which the new system of global polarization is taking shape.”

The expert believes that the sides may reach agreements on a number of issues:

“There are certain fundamental issues where the impact of polarization will already make itself felt. Just as the United States and the USSR once stood at opposite ends of this polarization, the USSR no longer exists, and China now occupies that place. Most likely, China will also have its own interests and demands. The extent to which these demands will satisfy the United States is a separate matter.

It is naturally impossible for the sides to reach a consensus on all issues. However, the likelihood of reaching agreement on many, particularly fundamental issues, is quite high.”

S. Humbatov also emphasized that the visit is important for bilateral relations, particularly economic and trade ties between China and the United States:

“In addition, at a time when artificial intelligence is developing rapidly, a serious competitive environment has already emerged between the United States and China. This is another factor increasing the significance of the meeting. A number of questions remain regarding both the economic and political landscape of the world, and I think all of them could be discussed at this meeting.”
