The noose is tightening: Yemen, Syria, Aegean tensions… Is Ankara being pulled into four fronts at once?

Türkiye has recently been facing simultaneously escalating tensions in Yemen, Syria and the Aegean.

In Yemen, the Houthis’ strengthening of their positions around the Bab el-Mandeb, Saudi Arabia’s request for military support from the US, and Washington’s refusal to provide it are increasing the risk of the confrontation spreading across the region.

The Houthis’ growing control over strategic islands and stretches of coastline could pose a serious threat to shipping and energy routes in the Red Sea.

Against this backdrop, military tensions are also increasing in Türkiye’s relations with Greece. Tank exercises held in Kırklareli and a possible visit by Mitsotakis to the island of Meis indicate that the Ankara-Athens confrontation in the Aegean may be coming back to the fore.

Reports that the Turkish language is being removed from the education curriculum in Syria also indicate that political and social tensions continue along Türkiye’s southern border.

Israel’s military messages directed at Türkiye are further complicating the picture.

The Israeli Navy commander’s statement that they are monitoring Türkiye’s activities and preparing accordingly, along with Netanyahu’s remarks concerning Syria and Iran, indicate that the confrontation in the region is moving into a broader security framework.

Thus, Ankara will have to take into account developments in Yemen, Syria, the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean simultaneously. Statements that Türkiye should not become directly involved in these conflicts are therefore not accidental.

The key issue is for Ankara to preserve its position as a regional power while preventing the growing confrontations in the Middle East and the Aegean from turning into a direct military threat to Türkiye.
