Svanadze appointed to national team, arrests begin in country – Georgia shaken again

Over the past week, Georgian media have mainly covered international diplomatic activities, sports developments and domestic events.

TodayPress TV reports that Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze visited New York as part of the UN General Assembly.

He met with Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset, with the sides discussing opportunities for future cooperation. In a high-level panel discussion, Kobakhidze reaffirmed Georgia’s commitment to the UN Charter and international rules. Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili, meanwhile, participated in the summit of the Crimea Platform and reiterated Georgia’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

An important change has taken place in the sports sector. Ramaz Svanadze has been appointed head coach of the Georgia national football team. He replaces French coach Willy Sagnol and will lead the team until the end of 2028.

The Ministry of Defence announced that an international sniper course had been completed in Mukhrovani and that Military Clergy Day had also been marked. Meetings were held with the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense of the United States. On September 27, the national flag was lowered at the ministry building in connection with the fall of Sukhumi.

Domestic news included various incidents. The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported several arrests and criminal cases. A boy was killed in a train accident in Samtredia, while two people were injured in a truck accident in Gudauri. Drugs were seized in Kakheti. Tensions have emerged between the Georgian Orthodox Church and Azerbaijan over work being carried out around a church in the Qakh district. The media also covered letters written from prison by former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, as well as other political developments.
