Lithuanian authorities have decided to deploy around 100 military personnel to the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region following a dangerous incident in Latvia.

TodayPress TV reports that Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas said the order had taken effect immediately.

The troops will support border guards over the next several weeks.

The decision was made following an incident on the Latvia-Belarus border. According to reports, armed and masked individuals attempted to bring around 20 migrants across the border and threatened Latvian military personnel.

The individuals reportedly later entered Latvian territory, damaged electrical equipment, stole two surveillance cameras and fled to Belarus.

Latvian authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the incident was linked to the activities of an organized criminal group.

Ukrainian serviceman and political analyst Taras Berezovets, meanwhile, claimed that the incident could have been a Russian intelligence operation. Warning of possible provocations against the Baltic states, he said Daugavpils and Narva could become potential flashpoints.
