Armenian language to be taught in Azerbaijan: “It will be important for our diplomats in the future”

“Amid changing geopolitical realities in the region, training local professionals who know the Armenian language is of strategic importance for Azerbaijan.”

Member of the Azerbaijani Parliament Jeyhun Mammadov said this in an interview with TodayPress TV.

He welcomed the launch of Armenian language instruction at Baku Slavic University (BSU) starting from the 2026–2027 academic year. According to the MP, establishing such a program is of particular importance:

“Considering that the Slavic University is an institution that trains specialists in various languages, it is highly important to introduce Armenian language instruction here as well. Because we have a need in this area. Yes, we are moving toward peace with Armenia. However, we will need specialists who know Armenian in the future. They may later work as diplomats in Armenia or represent Azerbaijan in various government and other institutions. From this perspective, the issue should be regarded as an area of particular importance and significance.”

The parliamentarian also noted that there is no need to introduce this practice at all higher education institutions, stressing that the main focus should be on developing a professional pool of specialists:

“Of course, there is no need to implement this across all universities in Azerbaijan. One of the most important issues here is training specialists. I believe that we should take steps toward developing specialists in this field.”

Touching upon the country’s educational and human-resource capacity, the MP also highlighted existing challenges and the tasks ahead:

“Today, we may indeed face certain difficulties in terms of specialists. We have specialists, but it is particularly important to involve more professionals in this area, have them work in the field and contribute to the process,” Jeyhun Mammadov said.
