Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that he previously spoke with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

TodayPress TV reports, citing Israel’s Channel 12 television station, that Netanyahu described the conversation as brief and tense.

“It was a brief and tense conversation,” the broadcaster quoted the prime minister as saying.

In September 2025, Netanyahu’s office announced that Israel was holding talks with Syria and seeking guarantees regarding the demilitarisation of the Arab republic’s southwestern region and the security of Syrian Druze.

In January 2026, the prime minister’s office said that Israel and Syria had resumed security contacts under US mediation following a hiatus of several months.
