“You are closer to that hell than we are...”

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has issued a stern warning to the Social Democratic Party (SPD) over the possibility of forming a coalition with the Left Party (Die Linke), which came first in the Berlin elections.

TodayPress TV reports that Merz made the remarks during a closed-door meeting of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag.

According to the report, the chancellor recalled criticism directed by the SPD at the CDU in early 2025. At the time, Rolf Mützenich, then leader of the Social Democrats’ parliamentary group in the Bundestag, criticized Merz over the use of votes from the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) in a vote on migration legislation, saying that he had “opened the door to hell.”

Merz, in turn, said that the SPD is now closer to that “hell” than the CDU and called on the party to make it “unambiguous” that it would not form a coalition with Die Linke in Berlin.
